Atlanta’s sports scene is a unique mix of the traditional and modern. Home to numerous amateur and professional sports, Atlanta has become one of the premier sports cities in the south.
Sports Destinations
Georgia Dome
The Georgia Dome hosts a plethora of sports over the year, but it is most known for hosting amateur and professional football. The United States’ largest indoor sports facility is the home of the Atlanta Falcons, college football’s Southeastern Conference Championship and Chick-Fil-A Bowl, and the Georgia High School Association football championships. Atlanta has also been host of two NFL Super Bowls in 1994 and 2000. Aside from football the Georgia Dome also hosts many college basketball events including the SEC and ACC Basketball Championships. It has also been host of the NCAA Final Four in 2002 and 2007.

Philips Arena
The current home of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers, and future home to Atlanta’s WNBA franchise, was built in 1999 to replace the Omni, which was deteriorating at the time. The 56th NHL All-Star Game is scheduled to be played in Philips Arena in 2008. It is also host to numerous concerts and events.

Turner Field
The Atlanta Braves’ home was originally built as Centennial Olympic Stadium in 1996 as the main stadium for the Olympic Games. After the Olympics ended the north end was demolished and it was converted into a 45,000 seat baseball stadium. It also hosts an annual contest between rivals University of Georgia and Georgia Tech which is one of the most attended college baseball games in the country.

Atlanta Motor Speedway is the host to two NASCAR races every year. The 125,000 seat track is one of the fastest on the circuit. The Speedway is also host to a number of smaller races and events.

The Arena at Gwinnett Center-Home of the Arena Football League’s Georgia Force and ECHL’s Gwinnett Gladiators along with other events and concerts.

Georgia Tech is home to the oldest stadium (Bobby Dodd Stadium) in the NCAA Football Subdivision. Built by the students at Georgia Tech built the stadium in 1913 and it is still used by the Yellow Jackets today. Georgia Tech is also home to the Alexander Memorial Coliseum where the school’s basketball plays their home games.

In 1996 Atlanta was home to the XXVI Olympiad, and visitors can still see the affects of the event today, most notably, the 21-acre Centennial Olympic Park.
Road Atlanta is a 2.54 mile road course which is home to numerous automobile and motorcycle races, including the Petit Le Mans race in early October.
The Peachtree Road Race is the largest 10-km race in the world with over 55,000 participants running last year. The event takes place every year on July 4th throughout the city.
